White House reporter: Obama administration 'most hostile' to journalists in US history

A longtime Washington reporter and White House correspondent has accused the current administration of being “the most hostile” to journalists in the history of the United States.
Former CNN correspondent Bob Franken was sitting down over the weekend with reporters at MSNBC when he was asked to weigh in on the current standoff between the White House and some of the biggest names in news when he made headline-grabbing remarks about this administration’s treatment of the press.
Allegations have been made lately by the likes of the Associated Press, Reuters and others that the White House has been excluding independent photographers from official functions with increasing regularity as of late, instead relying on a lone administration staffer to shoot images of US President Barack Obama for selected distribution among the press. In a recent letter sent by editors at the AP, Reuters, CNN, ABC, NBC and others, the organizations wrote “officials in this administration are blocking the public from having an independent view of important functions of the Executive Branch of government,” and McClatchy newspapers and USA Today both went as far as to vow to boycott official images provided by the White House in protest.
On Saturday, however, perhaps the harshest critique yet of this administration’s policy with regards to the press surfaced, courtesy of Franken, a longtime White House reporter who has covered the Washington beat since the 1980s.
Well, let's use the ‘P’ word here,” Franken told MNBC Live host TJ Holmes. “This is propaganda when it comes from the White House: government covering the government. “
It’s not what you’re supposed to do in the United States of America,” added Franken, “But we have an administration, every president gets to the point where he dislikes the press. It’s that simple. And every administration tries to manipulate the press. But this is the most hostile to the media that has been in United States history.”
When asked by Holmes to elaborate further, Franken specifically called out the Obama White House for the recent issues they’ve had with regards to official photography. According to Franken, the administration’s actions equate exactly to “shutting out the press,” an argument hinted at in the recent letter signed by the likes of the AP and others. Shortly after, though, Franken called into question other media snafus spawned by this administration in order to qualify the Obama presidency as the most hostile ever to journalists.
But the reason I say most hostile,” continued Franken, “is because of the Justice Department moves that they've made against the press. Obviously they have a contempt for the journalistic process. Those of us who are in journalism, of course, believe that it is vital if you're going to have informed electorate as opposed to one that’s been propagandized.”
Indeed, the latest episode pitting the White House against the nation’s media establishment is not the only one to scar the administration, not even in the last year. In May it was revealed that the Department of Justice was conducting surveillance targeting AP journalists, and soon after it was made public that Fox News reporter James Rosen was being monitored as well.
For 2013, Reporters Without Borders ranked the US as number 32 on the list of countries with the most press freedoms, and in October the Center to Protect Journalists published a 29-page scathing report scolding the Obama administration for its harsh treatment of the press, as well as the whistleblowers who have exposed newsworthy evidence only to be in turn prosecuted for espionage.
Franken, the cousin of Sen. Al Franken (D-Minnesota), was one of the main Washington correspondents at CNN for years before leaving during the second George W. Bush administration.

Robert Shiller, 2013 Nobel laureate in economics, told a German magazine sharp rises in equity and property prices may signal a dangerous financial bubble, which could have an extremely bad end.
The Sterling Professor of Economics at Yale University, who shared the Nobel Prize with two other Americans for research into market prices and asset bubbles, called the Brazilian property market and the US stock market areas where care is needed. 
"I am not yet sounding the alarm. But in many countries stock exchanges are at a high level and prices have risen sharply in some property markets," Shiller told Der Spiegel magazine. "That could end badly," he said.
Describing the overvaluation of the financial and technology sectors he commented: "I am most worried about the boom in the US stock market. Also because our economy is still weak and vulnerable".
Shiller is worried about house prices in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, saying Brazil as another area of concern.
"There, I felt a bit like in the United States of 2004," he said. The scientist draws a parallel between middle class growth and investment opportunities in Brazil to a similar trend he observed in the US around 2000.
The 2008 financial crisis was triggered with the help of a US housing bubble. "Bubbles look like this," he commented to  the magazine. "And the world is still very vulnerable to a bubble."
Financial bubbles appear when the investors don’t mind the increasing distance between asset price and market fundamentals, continuing to inject funds.
The US stock market has risen steadily over the past two months. The Dow Jones industrial average crossed 16,000 for the first time and the Standard & Poor's 500 index rose past 1,800, to a new record high.

I love this little Christmas ornament from Instructables, so I decided to build some a few years ago and give them as gifts. The pictures show my completed bots.

I tried to put personality into each bot; each bears an individual holiday greeting. Chef has a hand-hammered knife and an LED ‘Open’ sign. Cy included a spring bobble-head so the LED displays the classic Cylon wandering eye. Leia has her signature hair-do and a blaster.
I had trouble getting the original Instructables circuit working, so I substituted this Darkness Detecting circuit from our friends at Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories. The cool thing about this simple little circuit is that the solar panel effectively acts as the dark detector. When there’s no light to power the solar panel, a PNP transistor is activated, which allows the flashing LED to be powered from the battery. While the lights are on, the LED is off.
I extended a copper wire down through the robot body, which can either be used to make a stand, or you can put one of these little fellas on a Christmas tree by wrapping the wire around a branch.
Surplus cell phone batteries are charged by the solar panels. I found a cheap source for small solar panels at the Electronic Goldmine. The panels I got produced about 3.5V, which worked perfectly for my purposes.
My friends and family still enjoy their robots, and display the proudly.

Learning robotics is fun for both kids and adults, but there’s a bit of a learning curve that everyone struggles with. Mechanical design and construction, electrical and electronic systems, and programming don’t come intuitively to everyone.
However, there are some robotics products available now that remove these barriers by providing modular building blocks along with intuitive controls. Robots that can be built by linking identical or compatible modules have been developed by universities and research centers, but this sort of technology has not been easily available to individuals and educators.

One company working to change this isBarobo. The Maker Shed carries the Barobo Linkbot, and since I think it’s pretty cool it is one of my top robotic picks for the holiday season.
Graham Ryland and Professor Harry Cheng from the University of California Davis Integration Engineering Laboratory founded Barobo to bring their modular robotics concepts to the market. Barobo got some early backing from the National Science Foundation, and then launched a successful Kickstarter campaign. Their modular robotics systems were designed to support STEM education for K through 12 students, but anyone can use them for learning, research, or just for fun.

If you are looking for some cold weather fun, you can try this fun activity. Last night my kids filled a bunch of balloons with water and left them in the front yard to freeze overnight.

Named after the company founder’s dog, the Bukobot returns for the second year to the MAKE Ultimate Guide to 3D Printing. Was it well behaved, or did it come back to bite us? We spent significant time with the Bukobot to learn what makes it tick.

Updated and Upgraded

An updated version of last year’s Bukobot, the machine is back with the same 8″×8″×8″ build area, for a usable volume of 512 cubic inches. The frame, made almost exclusively of aluminum extrusions, now has fewer printed parts, some of them swapped out for laser-cut acrylic.
The footprint is about average and portability is decent; we were able to move the machine around without impacting calibration. Crucial parts are exposed and could get snagged in transit, so using the included semi-rigid travel case is your best bet. Notably, the Bukobot and its smaller sibling Bukito (see page 64) were the only machines in the shootout to come with travel cases for portability.

Unique Hardware Design

There’s no getting around the look of the unit — and our testers were black and white in their take on it. “Future industrial,” said some. “The work of a mad scientist,” said others. The electronics and power supply are exposed, as is much of the wiring — and while it’s all well handled, it does give the machine a sci-fi look.
Despite its polarizing appearance, the Bukobot got glowing reviews for its mechanical design considerations, many of which were unique among printers we tested. Deezmaker uses synchromesh cable for transferring motion instead of the belts used by every other vendor. The cables work quietly, don’t wear out like belts do, and are veritably skip-proof. We also liked the z-axis sliders that fit inside the aluminum extrusions — though the long-term performance and durability of these innovative methods aren’t yet well understood.
The Bukobot’s documentation is wiki-style, available at bukobot.com, and seems to be current. The site has prebuilt configuration files for Slic3r and Repetier-Host, two common open-source software tools, but it doesn’t go in-depth on how to operate these tools. The configurations have settings for different layer heights, infill percentages, and recommended plastics. The profiles aren’t without issues, though; one that we downloaded for 3mm plastic had a filament diameter of 1.70 set in it, a misstep that could trip up an inexperienced operator.
We called tech support on a weekend and they answered questions quickly. As well, Deezmaker has a retail presence in Pasadena, Calif., and hosts regular 3D printing meetups.

Put a Fan On It

We tested the Bukobot with both ABS and PLA, both of which worked well. The machine prints in 3mm filament exclusively, and it can also print in both polycarbonate and nylon according to the enthusiast community. We wished it had a cooling fan to blow on the prints while using PLA — just placing a desk fan next to the unit made huge improvements in print quality.
Unlike the smaller Bukito, our Bukobot did not come with an SD card slot, meaning we had to print via USB. An SD card upgrade is available and is probably a good investment if you’re going to do longer prints.
Default print speeds were above average for the group, and we pushed them significantly faster with almost no impact to print quality. The machine lacks an integrated filament spool; the company recommends a specific lazy-susan turntable, which worked well in our testing.
This isn’t a printer for a first-timer, but it could be great in a makerspace or a tech-focused user group. It’s not for someone with small children, either — exposed cables and moving parts are easy to get your hands into.

Conclusion

Deezmaker has been consistently out in front, getting new ideas into new printers for sale — and the Bukobot 8 v2 is no exception. The exposed wiring and electronics aren’t for everyone, but if you’re looking for something fast, quiet, and a little bit quirky, this is a machine to pursue.
